COVID-19 & Iowa Baja's 2020-2021 Season

After many months of battling the challenges as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak, Iowa Baja has gotten permission to resume club activities with precautions in place.

For the 2020-2021 Iowa Baja season, the executive board has been working closely with The University of Iowa to ensure safety during each and every meeting. Large group sessions have been shifted to an online format where members learn new skills and information about the Baja cars each week. This includes learning about suspension, brakes, drive-train, CREO, and many other important aspects specific to a Baja car.

Shop times to work on the cars have been permitted, however, follow a strict set of guidelines put into place following CDC and University recommendations

It’s definitely been an interesting semester with a lot of different requirements to be met. Shop times are very unique only having 6 people in the shop for an hour at a time. We’re still actively working to finish building and designing our nationals car in preparation for competition this coming spring.

COVID-19 Precautions while in shop include:

  • only using the space during the designed times that were submitted and approved (Sundays 12:00pm-8:00pm)

  • Shifts limited to 2 hours in duration

  • Shop capacity will not exceed six students at any point in time

  • The Baja Safety Coordinator must be present at all shifts

  • The shop door will not be propped open (each student should swipe their access card to enter)

  • Face coverings must be worn at all times while in shared space

    • Other safety protocols should be followed at all times (maintaining six feet of space, wearing safety goggles, etc.)

  • Each student follows an appropriate clean in/clean out protocol for all areas worked

  • Cleaning supplies (disinfecting wipes, hand sanitizer, face shields, shop towels and gloves) are for use by all student organizations sharing the space. The supplies do not leave the room and are replenished as needed

It’s a been very nice to have some sort of normalcy in this crazy year with being able to get back into the shop and finishing what we started last year. Wearing a mask is something new for all of us, but since We take safety seriously there hasn’t been much of a change from previous years.
— Pierce Knarr (Vice President)
