Baja NOW: REVEAL DAY - Car 51 Nighthawk: April 21, 2019
Presenting, our 2019 National Competition Vehicle – Nighthawk. With our all-new design for 2019, Iowa Baja pushed boundaries more than ever before. Nighthawk began with an all-new frame design, fabricated by hand with optimized suspension mounting points. Front suspension included a revised double-wishbone setup with dual front A-Arms.
Our Wheel Hubs, redesigned for 2019, were milled on our in-shop mill by Kyle Scharm with the objective of improving our Ackermann. The rear suspension was enhanced as well, with a redesigned 5-Link suspension. The new version will reduce plunge in our driveshafts while ensuring no change of camber with our back wheels.
Our steering box is all-new as well, with an optimized "I" Design steering wheel to eliminate hand-over-hand steering motion and the need to remove hands from the wheel during cornering.
New for 2019, we hand-crafted a new cockpit seat. Developed and tested in-house, the seat was hand-crafted out of lightweight and durable Carbon Fiber. The profile of the seat was explicitly crafted for the driver using a 3D scanner to scan the lower torso, waist, and legs of the driver to ensure a comfortable, secure fit.
Finally, our 2019 Brake System Design sought to remedy an issue which plagues Baja Teams from across the world, Technical Inspection Brake Check. To pass Brake Check, all 4 wheels must lock up when commanded. To achieve this, all new steel hard steel brake lines were used to eliminate pressure loss and stopping power with soft rubber lines.
We are excited to have Nighthawks compete at 2019 Baja SAE Nationals in Gorman, CA. Stay tuned to watch these featured designs in action on future BajaNOW's!
